Virginia City

Virginia City boomed on Comstock silver in the 1860s and 1870s, and much of that town still stands. So do the stories about who never left.

    The Washoe Club Haunted Museum & Saloon

    Visit Virginia City's 2026 haunted itinerary says visitors report a Lady in Blue near the spiral staircase, phantom footsteps and a miner seen at the bar. A 2023 Visit Virginia City article says the ghost of a woman named Lena has been seen at the club, and the club itself points to its Ghost Adventures episodes.

    On Reddit Reddit users describe the Washoe Club as the most haunted stop in Virginia City, reporting footsteps, whispers, a perfume smell, a piano heard in an empty room and odd photos from the basement crypt on tours and overnight stays. Skeptics in the same threads point to lens flare and old-building noises.

    Working saloon on the ground floor, listed as open Sunday to Thursday 11 am to 7 pm and Friday and Saturday 11 am to 11 pm (the hours page was last updated in 2020). The upstairs museum is seen on the ghost tour, $10 adults and $5 kids; a $20 yearly membership includes museum admission.

    Silver Terrace Cemeteries

    Visit Reno Tahoe puts these hillside burial grounds, used since the 1860s, on its list of haunted Virginia City places, though it describes the setting rather than naming a specific ghost. The cemetery is also a stop on the town's ghost tours.

    On Reddit Reddit users call the cemeteries at the north end of town their favorite Virginia City stop, peaceful by day and eerie at night. Posters describe warm breath on their necks during a night visit, a black shape in a Halloween-night photo and being chased out by something as teens, and note the gate now keeps late-night visitors out.

    Daily hours not published on the pages checked. The Comstock Cemetery Foundation has kept the gates open on Halloween night, 6 to 10:30 pm, for self-guided audio tours ($5 adults, $3 kids 12 and under); 2026 not confirmed.

    Silver Queen Hotel

    A 2023 Visit Virginia City article says Room 11 is where a woman named Rosie is rumored to have died in the bathtub, and that guests report loud steps, rattling doorknobs and Rosie on a long staircase. Visit Reno Tahoe adds a second ghost, Annie, and activity in rooms 11 and 13.

    On Reddit Reddit users who stayed at the Silver Queen describe a hallway chandelier swaying on its own, footsteps, a woman's scream heard by a whole floor at night and a portrait that seemed to smile; some single out Room 11. Others spent the night and noticed nothing.

    Hotel and saloon on C Street, open and taking reservations. Check-in 1 to 5 pm (or call), checkout 11 am; featured rooms listed at $109 to $185 a night. Saloon hours aren't published.

    The Mackay Mansion

    The mansion's own site says visitors may meet two little girls on the staircase, a maid named Harriet in the parlor and a Shadow Man upstairs. Visit Virginia City's 2026 itinerary says seven or more apparitions have been reported, including a girl named Elizabeth in a white dress and a colonel in the kitchen.

    On Reddit Reddit users describe booted footsteps upstairs in an empty house, a voice recorded during an investigation, a shadowy profile in a photo from the vault, and visitors suddenly feeling dizzy on the back staircase, which staff told one poster has happened to others. Skeptics suggest heat, altitude or a gas heater.

    Day tours, first come, first served: summer 10 am to 5 pm weekdays and 10 am to 6 pm weekends, winter noon to 5 pm daily; the site points to Google for current hours. $14 adults, $7 ages 6 to 12, free 5 and under.

    St. Mary's Art Center

    Visit Virginia City's 2026 haunted itinerary says staff and visitors describe footsteps in empty hallways, flickering lights and cold spots in the 1876 former St. Mary Louise Hospital. Visit Reno Tahoe adds the legend of a 'White Nun' who unmakes guests' beds and a man seen sitting in a wheelchair.

    On Reddit Reddit users call the former hospital 'pretty active,' describing boot sounds, voices, orbs in photos and something sitting on the bed beside a friend in the old priest's room, and recommend its overnight Halloween ghost events.

    Galleries open Wednesday to Sunday, 11 am to 4 pm, seasonally from Easter to mid-December. Admission $8 (ages 7 to 59); $6 for seniors 60 and up, veterans and ages 3 to 6. Guest rooms can be booked for overnight stays. No elevator; only the first floor is ramp-accessible.

    Chollar Mine

    The mine's own 'Hauntings' page recounts Ghost Adventures' visits, when the crew reported being hit by something metal and recorded a voice that seemed to say 'help,' along with other groups' reports of shadow figures and thrown pebbles.

    Guided tours only. In summer, tours start around 11 am daily with the last at 4 pm, weather permitting; call ahead. Prices by phone, cash only. Paranormal and night tours by appointment.

    Delta Saloon

    The saloon keeps the 'Suicide Table,' a faro table its own site says was said to have driven unlucky gamblers to despair. Visit Virginia City repeats the legend that heavy losses at the table cost gamblers their lives.

    Open Monday and Tuesday 10 am to 10 pm, Wednesday to Sunday 8 am to 10 pm, per the saloon's site. No admission listed.

    Storey County Courthouse

    Visit Reno Tahoe's haunted list says the legend of Peter Larkin, hanged after his girlfriend testified against him, still clings to the building, and that his cries for justice can be heard if you listen closely. Visit Virginia City calls it Nevada's oldest continuously operating courthouse.

    The old jail inside is a museum, open year-round 8 am to 5 pm on courthouse hours; admission by donation. Closed on holidays.

    Gold Hill Hotel & Saloon

    The hotel's site says Rosie's Room (No. 4) and William's Room (No. 5) are said to be haunted by friendly spirits. Visit Virginia City's 2026 itinerary says guests report the scent of roses, children running in the halls and tobacco smoke in William's Room.

    On Reddit Reddit users who stayed in Rosie's Room and the Miner's Cabin describe knocks at the foot of the bed, a woman's voice on a recorder and a heavy feeling of dread at dinner; other recent posts complain about service rather than ghosts.

    Historic Fourth Ward School Museum

    Visit Reno Tahoe's list of haunted Virginia City places says the spirit of a former teacher, Miss Suzzie, is seen searching the grounds for her students. The museum's own site doesn't mention ghosts.

    2026 season May 1 to Oct 31, daily 10 am to 5 pm; Nov 1 to Apr 28, Fridays through Mondays, 11 am to 3 pm. Admission $9 adults (13 and up), $6 ages 6 to 12, free 5 and under, $25 family pass.

    Piper's Opera House

    Visit Virginia City's 2026 haunted itinerary says visitors report hearing music with no source, and that the balcony, attic and basement are thought to be the most active spots. Visit Reno Tahoe says the ghost of John Piper himself is said to appear.

    Tours on select days, April to October, $10 adults and $5 children, sold at the opera house or the Virginia City Visitors Center; days and times aren't posted. Otherwise open for scheduled shows and events.

    Sugarloaf Mountain Motel

    Visit Reno Tahoe says each room keeps a 'ghost log' for guests to record odd happenings, and that the 'Doll Room' is where people report breathing, footsteps, laughter and moving doors. The motel's own site makes no ghost claims.

Reno and Sparks

Reno's stories stay close to downtown, the river, and its older mansions.

  • Open to visit outdoors Reno

    Robb Canyon at Rainbow Ridge Park

    OnlyInYourState (2018, archived) and Dennis William Hauck's Haunted Places directory both repeat the legend of murder victims found in the canyon and reports of lights and screams. Neither cites a police record, and we found none, so treat the murders as legend.

    On Reddit Reddit users call the ravine beside Rainbow Ridge Park Reno's best-known haunted outdoor spot, describing screams, a voice saying 'help me,' drum-like sounds and red eyes in the brush at night, plus car batteries dying after visits. The legend says several people were murdered and left in the canyon in the 1970s, but commenters who looked found no record of those killings.

    Daylight recommended; follow posted City of Reno park hours. Public city park with a paved path; the canyon is brushy drainage that is hard to walk in the dark. Homes line both sides, so keep noise down.

    University of Nevada, Reno (Morrill Hall and DeLaMare Library)

    Visit Reno Tahoe's ghost roundup says Morrill Hall is rumored to be haunted by a woman in 1920s dress, and that a playful ghost of Clarence Mackay gets blamed for stopped clocks and lights flicking on and off in the DeLaMare Library.

    On Reddit Reddit users, including a former resident assistant, share campus stories: a phantom piano and violin in the Church Fine Arts building, knocking, moving shadows and a feeling of being watched in Nye, Argenta and Sierra halls, a student ghost called Jimmy in Lincoln Hall, and dorms built on land that was once a cemetery. Other commenters say UNR is 'tied with all the other schools at 0 confirmed ghosts.'

    University campus; building hours vary, so check the campus site before going.

    Levy House (former Sundance Books and Music)

    OnlyInYourState (archived) describes reports of running footsteps, cold spots and moved objects and says seances were held there. Wikipedia confirms the 1906 house was turned on its lot around 1940 and housed Sundance Books and Music from 2011 to 2024, and This Is Reno called the bookstore closed in October 2024.

    On Reddit Reddit users say the 1906 Levy mansion, long home to Sundance Books, is haunted: workers at the bookstore and an earlier hair studio reportedly avoided the attic because of voices, found objects moved overnight and heard footsteps upstairs when no one was there.

    Historic building on California Ave. The bookstore has closed and we could not confirm who occupies it now or whether the public can go inside.

    The Brewer's Cabinet (Arlington Ave. brewpub)

    A Reno paranormal YouTube channel, The Haunted Side, filmed an investigation of the building in 2019. No news outlet has covered the claims.

    On Reddit Reddit users say employees report activity in the upstairs part of the old building and pass around a local paranormal team's video investigation; some longtime neighbors who have eaten there for years had never heard the stories.

    Hillside Cemetery and Reno Hebrew Cemetery

    This Is Reno (2019 and 2022) confirms Hillside is Reno's oldest established cemetery, a few blocks west of the university, and that it suffered years of neglect and vandalism before a volunteer foundation began restoring it. We found no non-Reddit account of specific sightings.

    On Reddit Reddit users tie UNR's dorm ghost stories to the old cemeteries beside campus, and one poster says they have heard several creepy stories about people seeing things at night in the Hebrew cemetery on Angel St.

    Lake Mansion

    US Ghost Adventures, whose Reno ghost tour starts here, ties the house to Reno's early days and says visitors often report sudden drops in temperature and footsteps in empty hallways.

    On Reddit A former docent says they had a personal experience in the Lake Mansion but would not call it definitely haunted, and other Reddit users list it among Reno's haunted buildings worth a ghost hunter's visit.

    Home of the nonprofit Arts for All Nevada; its site blocked automated checks, so hours weren't verified. The nightly Reno ghost tour meets here.

    Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts

    The stories come from former workers on Reddit and from a local ghost tour, as retold on Reddit.

    On Reddit Former workers on Reddit describe a late maintenance man who lingers in the downstairs lobby and a corner stall of the women's restroom, and a performer who ran a show there for three years says he saw something in the lower backstage level every weekend; a ghost-tour guest reports being told a ghost called Gus haunts the theater.

    Walden's Coffeehouse (Arlington Ave.)

    We haven't found this story told anywhere but Reddit. The posts may all come from one former employee.

    On Reddit In three threads, a poster who says they worked there describes a presence staff call 'Maria' who turns on the bathroom faucets, slams the back door and sets off the alarm after hours, and suggests sitting in the back room early in the morning.

    El Cortez Hotel building

    The hotel building on West 2nd Street has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984. We haven't found this story told anywhere but Reddit.

    On Reddit A poster who worked in the El Cortez building says they and coworkers had many strange experiences and mentions a locked door to tunnels below; a former resident recalls the elevator stopping on the wrong floors and ending up at a room they did not remember walking to.

    Business hours of the ground-floor tenants. Street-level businesses are open to the public during their hours; the upper floors are residential and not open to visitors.

    Grand Sierra Resort

    The resort has also been the MGM Grand Reno, Bally's Reno, and the Reno Hilton. We haven't found this story told anywhere but Reddit.

    On Reddit In an 87-comment thread from July 2026, posters who say they work or worked at the GSR describe shadow figures in back-of-house halls, voices on floors closed for renovation, a female presence in a lower-level office area and a little girl in an old-fashioned dress, and a guest reports a dark figure in an older first-floor room. Skeptics point to sleep loss and pareidolia.

    On Reddit Reddit users say one floor of the hotel was long rumored to be haunted, with voices heard in a particular bathroom, and a former overnight cleaner found the big laundry room ominous; a thread about getting lost in its locked emergency stairwells drew mostly skeptical replies.

    US Ghost Adventures' Reno tour describes it as the backdrop for thousands of historic divorces and says cold spots and lingering figures are often reported there.

Carson City

The capital's ghost stories gather around its oldest buildings and the old state prison.

    Nevada State Prison

    The Nevada State Prison Preservation Society runs evening ghost walks built on stories of deaths and reported paranormal activity, and Visit Carson City says ghost-walk guests have reported floating orbs and a gravelly voice.

    On Reddit Reddit users call the closed prison 'insanely haunted,' with one poster describing something three people saw at once on a recent visit and others recommending its paranormal tours. A former correctional officer who worked graveyard there says he never saw a ghost and that the real history is the reason to go.

    Only on guided tours: Saturday history tours May through October ($20, about 90 minutes), evening ghost walks ($50, ages 15 and up) and private overnight investigations (from $125 per person). Tours include the museum and gift shop.

    Brewery Arts Center

    Visit Reno Tahoe says a ghost believed to be community leader James P. Maar greets visitors at the old brewery building.

    On Reddit One Reddit user says the old brewery building is 'definitely haunted' by a prankster ghost, describing being locked in a room, as others have been, until someone opened a door that turned out to work fine.

    Arts center in the former brewery; the Nevada Artists Association gallery inside is open Tuesday to Sunday, noon to 4 pm.

    Nevada Governor's Mansion

    Visit Carson City's July 2026 ghost-story post says staff and overnight guests have seen the same woman in a long white dress, believed to be First Lady Una Dickerson, whose daughter June was born in the house, and that a male presence is heard climbing the stairs.

    Still the governor's official residence, so access is limited and Visit Carson City lists no regular public tours. The exterior is on the Kit Carson Trail, and the nightly US Ghost Adventures tour meets outside.

    Nevada State Museum (old Carson City Mint)

    Visit Carson City's July 2026 ghost-story post says museum staff have heard unexplained footsteps and that the elevator is known to run by itself, which it ties to Mint superintendent Abe Curry and to Osborne Parker, a worker crushed by falling equipment in the basement.

    Tuesday to Sunday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Admission $10 adults, free for 17 and under. Visit Carson City lists the museum's 'Fright at the Museum' haunted basement tours for Oct 10, 2026, 6 to 9 pm ($15, ages 10 and up).

Washoe Valley and Genoa

Nevada settled here first. Genoa dates to 1851, and the valley has mansions and cemeteries older than the state.

    Bowers Mansion

    Wikipedia confirms the 1863 mansion and the family's losses: two children died as infants, daughter Persia died at 12 in 1874, and Eilley Bowers lost the house to foreclosure in 1876. Washoe County runs the mansion as a museum. We found no non-Reddit source for the pool legend.

    On Reddit Reddit users list Bowers Mansion among the area's haunted places, pointing to the Bowers family's losses and a long-running kids' legend that the old pool beside the mansion is haunted by someone who drowned; others say they never found it scary.

    2026 mansion tours: Saturdays through Oct. 24 and Nevada Day (Fri., Oct. 30), at 11, 12, 1, 2 and 3. County regional park with picnic lawns; the mansion interior is open by guided tour on posted dates.

    Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park

    Visit Carson Valley says ghostly sightings have been reported across the ranch property.

    Grounds open daily, sunrise to sunset, except during some private or ticketed events. Guided tours are offered; call (775) 783-9417 for times and prices.

    Genoa Bar and Saloon

    Visit Carson Valley's haunted guide says a ghost called Red likes to turn on the jukebox and toss straws at customers and staff in what it calls Nevada's oldest bar.

    Open daily from 10 am.

    Genoa Cemetery

    Visit Carson Valley says paranormal investigators describe the spirits here as 'playful,' and that unexplained lights have been reported at the grave of miner Bill Zirn, whose marker is the granite boulder that struck him.

    Hours not published. Signs point to Snowshoe Thompson's grave, and Visit Carson Valley suggests the book 'The Old Genoa Cemetery' as a walking guide.

    Mormon Station State Historic Park

    Visit Carson Valley says local lore makes the chicken coop, of all places, the park's paranormal hot spot.

    Park always open and free. Museum May to September daily 10 am to 4 pm; October to April 11 am to 3 pm, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Museum admission $1, free for 12 and under.

    The Pink House

    Visit Carson Valley's haunted guide says a former housekeeper is said to still be serving tea in the 1855 house, where Judge Daniel Virgin's family lost two children.

    Restaurant and bar with an events space; hours aren't listed on its site, so call (775) 392-4279.

Lake Tahoe and Truckee

Old lodges, estates, and railroad towns around the lake have ghost stories too.

    Donner Memorial State Park (Donner Party site)

    California State Parks runs the park and its visitor center, which covers the Donner Party, the Native people of the area, and the railroad builders.

    On Reddit Reddit users call the Donner Party story one of the creepiest in the region, mention a paranormal team's investigation at a Donner cabin site, and point to the Donner Camp picnic area at Alder Creek.

    Park sunrise to sunset; Visitor Center daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Thanksgiving, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1). State park with a day-use fee.

  • Off-limits casino Crystal Bay

    Cal Neva Lodge

    Wikipedia confirms the lodge's history. Moonshine Ink (Nov. 2024) reports it has been closed since 2013, that owner McWhinney began renovation work in 2024, and that the goal was to reopen for its 100th anniversary in 2026. Claims that Sinatra or Monroe haunt it are legend.

    On Reddit Reddit users call the Cal Neva one of Tahoe's creepiest spots because of its mob-era history and ties to Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe. One poster describes a man in a white 1950s-style suit and fedora vanishing into a hotel bathroom, another says they saw a ghost backstage in the Sinatra showroom as a kid, and others recall the lodge running ghost tours of its bungalows and tunnels.

    Closed and under renovation in the latest coverage we found; treat it as a construction site with security. Check whether it has reopened before listing it as visitable.

    Lake Tahoe (preserved bodies and Tahoe Tessie legends)

    The Los Angeles Times (2011) and KQED's Quest report that Cousteau never explored the lake and that authorities mapped the bottom with sonar and mini-subs without finding any graveyard; the legend grew from the very slow decay of bodies in cold water. Wikipedia traces Tahoe Tessie sightings back to 1865.

    On Reddit Reddit users repeat the lake's best-known legends: bodies preserved in the cold deep water, a claim that Jacques Cousteau saw something 'the world is not ready for,' a tunnel to Pyramid Lake, and the lake monster Tahoe Tessie. Many commenters point out these have been debunked.

    Public beaches around the lake; the legends are not tied to one spot, so there is no single place to map.

    Donner Summit railroad tunnels (Summit Tunnel and China Wall)

    Moonshine Ink (2020) confirms the tunnels and China Wall were built largely by Chinese laborers in the 1860s, are no longer in service, and are still owned by Union Pacific, which discourages entry; visitors can be cited for trespassing. We found no ghost story beyond Reddit.

    On Reddit Reddit users name the graffiti-covered train tunnels at Donner Pass as a creepy place to explore at night, joking that if the ghosts do not get you the Donner Party will; others simply recommend them for photos and hiking.

    Union Pacific property, and entering can bring a trespassing citation. The China Wall and snowsheds are visible from Donner Pass Rd.

    Visit Reno Tahoe says several ghosts are rumored to roam the grounds of the lakeside estate.

    On Reddit A Reddit user on a lodge tour says they heard a sound like a knife dragged along the stone fireplace wall as they left the living room and later learned the place is said to be haunted; Tahoe threads also repeat legends about owner George Whittell Jr., his pet lion and an elephant said to have drowned in the lake.

    Guided tours only, by reservation, May through October on Tuesdays and Fridays, plus select Saturdays in July and August; boat tours on the Tahoe Star leave from the south shore. Call (775) 832-8750.

    Fannette Island (Emerald Bay)

    Carson Now (Sept. 2026, a Nevada Day 'Tall Tales' piece) retells the story of Captain Dick Barter and says some believe he still haunts Fannette Island. California State Parks confirms the island can be reached only by boat and is closed in April and May for wildlife breeding.

    On Reddit Reddit users bring up Captain Dick Barter, the 1860s hermit of Emerald Bay who lived on and near the island, as a favorite Tahoe ghost story.

    The Truckee Hotel (Moody's bar)

    Visit Truckee-Tahoe's Halloween guide says paranormal investigators have called the Truckee Hotel bar haunted. The hotel's own site, which dates it to 1873, tells no ghost stories.
