Dark Prison

Most haunted houses build fake prison sets. Dark Prison skipped that step. It runs inside the former Nevada State Prison in Carson City, which held inmates from 1862 until the state closed it in 2012. The gates stayed shut for 13 years. Now they’re open every October, and people line up to walk in.

What you’re walking into

Three separate haunts operate inside the real cellblocks. Cell Block C tells the prison-break story that gives the attraction its name. Unit 15, “The Doctor Is In,” runs from the warden’s office down to the morgue. The Institute for the Unwell recreates a 1957 psychiatric ward mid-catastrophe. More than 60 live actors work the building a night.

Between haunts there’s The Yard, a full entertainment zone with food trucks, carnival games, a DJ, and fire dancers, plus The Shiv Bar, a 21+ bar poured inside the prison’s historic muster room. Plan on a whole evening, not a 20-minute walkthrough.

The building did time first

No set designer could invent this venue. The Nevada State Prison opened in 1862, two years before Nevada was a state, with Carson City founder Abraham Curry as its first warden. Inmates quarried sandstone on the grounds that built the State Capitol. In 1924 the prison carried out the first lethal-gas execution in the world, and from 1932 to 1967 it ran the Bullpen, the only known inmate-operated casino in American history, complete with brass tokens minted inside. Ghost Adventures filmed here, the site sits on the National Register of Historic Places, and part of every Dark Prison season funds the nonprofit that preserves it. Walk the cellblocks in October and you’re inside 160 years of the real thing.

The numbers back it up

Dark Prison holds a 4.9 Google rating across 360 reviews, the highest of any haunted attraction in the Reno, Sparks, and Carson City area. In 2025 the Haunted Attraction Association put it on its Iconic Haunts Platinum List, the only Nevada haunt to make it. Over 15,000 people came through in the 2025 season, from 45 states and as far as the UK. One Google reviewer kept it simple: “It is truly a masterful haunt.”

The operation signed a five-year partnership with the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society in 2026, so the cellblocks aren’t going anywhere. Part of every season funds preservation of the site itself.

Know before you go

This is the most intense haunt in the region, with strobes, fog, and a strict no-touch policy both ways. Kids 12 and under need an adult, and children under 5 aren’t permitted. Weekend nights sell out on timed entry, so book ahead, and the VIP tier adds priority line access, a behind-the-scenes history tour, and lounge access above the yard. There’s also an off-season fix: the Halfway to Halloween show each May.
